A gentle but also powerful and potentially transformative approach to yoga which can have profound effects and is suitable for both complete beginners and those with previous experience. The teaching is geared towards going back to basics with an emphasis on undoing rather than doing as we learn to move from the core of our being.
Yoga brings life and awareness to our bodies and there is no need to contort the body into difficult postures to gain the benefits of yoga.
My approach to teaching yoga has been particularly influenced by the training I received from The Inner Yoga Trust and several yoga teachers who were students of the late Vanda Scaravelli, including, Diane Long, Sophy Hoare and John Stirk.
This approach encourages moving from the bony structures of the body rather than from the muscles. This means that as we move and bring life to the bones, the muscles will begin to release and find their own place around them. We can then start to feel that muscles are for freedom of movement and flexibility not for being strong and tight. By develoing an awareness of the ground beneath us, the movement of the breath within our bodies and the natural ability of the spine to lengthen, we can begin to release and undo the tension that we all hold in our bodies.
Students are encouraged to develop an awareness to feel how the body needs to move. By moving with awareness our bodies begin to respond with increasing energy, which can assist in bringing changes to our health, posture, vitality and state of mind.
We come to understand both ourselves and others better through the practice of the yoga postures, breathing practices and meditation techniques.
